Brought to you by Wassa Dance and Village Volunteers
Thanksgiving Day, Thursday, November 26, 2009 9 a.m. -10:30 a.m. At ARC School of Ballet In the Crown Hill Community Building 9250 14th Street NW Seattle, WA 98117 Dance with Us! Start your Thanksgiving Day with an inspiring community dance for a great cause. Join Village Volunteers, Wassa Dance's Lara McIntosh, and some of Seattle’s finest percussionists as we dance to raise micro-finance funds for Feed Villages, a local, bio-intensive farming project in Kiminini, Kenya. Everyone is welcome! Come prepared for a unique African-inspired group dance experience. Wear comfortable clothing, please remove shoes at the door (no street shoes on the dance floor). About the Cause In response to draught and growing famine, Village Volunteers’ Feed Villages program has developed a project training people to grow their own food using locally available resources, with less water and energy. Partnering with Common Ground in Kiminini, Kenya, local women learn bio-intensive farming methods. Funding pays for training in sustainable agricultural methods, rainwater harvesting, and seed saving, so people can grow food to feed their families. Local demonstration farms and tree nurseries provide models for healthy, practical, and sustainable agricultural techniques. All the food produced is donated to schools, orphan homes, and vulnerable families. In five rural villages, several garden beds are dedicated to growing out seeds for biodiversity and stocking a seed bank for future crops. Tree seedlings from the nurseries are used to restore tree cover to villages. For every $27 donation, Village Volunteers' Feed Villages program will be able to provide a woman with seed, tools and training! Donate! Please make all checks payable to: Village Volunteers. All documented donations are tax deductible. Does your employer match donations? Village Volunteers is a 501 C-3 organization. GATHER & RESTORE: A Workshop for Moving into Winter
with Cicely Andree Saturday, November 21, 1:00-3:30pm As the days become shorter and darkness of winter arrives, we have an opportunity to dialogue with what the season brings. Winter is a time of contemplation, stillness and going within. When we go inward with patience and gentleness, we uncover parts of ourselves that have been living beneath the surface. Often this time of unraveling and letting go brings grace as we hold the space for our own discoveries. Come join us as we explore creating ease and stillness in the body to prepare for the quiet of Winter. This workshop will incorporate gentle yoga poses and movements to access the parasympathetic nervous system. When working with this system, we can experience a great amount of change and renewal in the body and mind, which nourishes and calms us. We will begin the workshop with floor-based dance movements to create fluidity in the body. Mindful partner work will be explored to take us deeper into our bodies and access the parasympathetic nervous system. We will continue to explore using restorative poses that involve gentle supported forward bends, twists, back-bending and inversions. The workshop will finish with simple pranayama and a luscious long savasana. The workshops will be taught in a slow, focused manner and is open to all levels of practitioners. Participants will receive a handout of sequences for use at home throughout the Winter months! $35 pre register/$40 at the door • Location: Fremont

Have you ever had a close encounter of the creepy kind?
You notice a young dude staring at you from across the parking lot or on the bus, a guy trying to buy you a drink at the dance club seems too aggressive, or the too-friendly friend of a friend introduced at a party is too chatty. Maybe your brother-in-law is giving you a look that gives you the chills, a new co-worker's overly-personal questions puts you on edge, or a client's comments make you doubt his prime interest is business. Let's face it, every female over the age of 14 (and many under that age) has experienced a creepy approach. And you wonder: could he harm me? In this class you will learn how to answer that question. And, if the answer is yes, what to do about it. Upcoming Classes: Weekend Workshop Nov 20-22 through the ASUW Experimental College. Click here for more information and registration. Self-Defense 101 at Bellevue College: Four Saturday afternoons at BC's North Campus beginning Feb 20, 1:30 - 3:30 pm. Self-Defense 101 at UW Women's Center: Four Tuesday evenings beginning Feb 2, 6:45 to 8:45 pm. Click here for more information and registration for Self-Defense 101 classes. Be prepared. Know your craft. Auditions are your way to market your skills and demonstrate your value to the entertainment industry. 2. Be professional and courteous - to everyone- from the security guard at the front gate of the studio to the receptionist to the casting director, and everyone in the audition room. A performer’s personal behavior speaks volumes. Talent is hired on 3 things, your look. talent and your professionalism. 3. Be punctual. Casting takes place in a fast-paced environment and casting directors appreciate consideration of their time and schedules. Don’t waste their time! Be personable and responsive, but don’t talk too much or overstay your welcome. 4. Headshots and resumes. Make sure your headshot looks like you. Airbrush all you want, but you better look like just like your photo when you walk into that room. Always have extra headshots and resumes on hand at every audition. 5. Presentation. Make sure you can be seen and heard. Position yourself so that your face is visible (also, keep long hair out of your face). If you can’t be seen or heard, your performance is lost. Dressing for a role is fine, but don’t wear a costume. Wear something that suggests the character or the profession and let your performance do the rest. 6. Do your homework. Know who you are auditioning for. By researching the director, casting director, producer and show, you may find connections to other people or projects, and learn about the style or genre of a project or its creators. 7. Don’t let anything throw you. You have a right to be there, you were invited there to audition. When other performers enter the waiting room and don’t look like you, think about yourself as “the other way to go.” Often the casting process is about exploring various ways to go with a character, so stay confident and show them how you would do the role. If you’re asked to read another role or make an adjustment, take a moment, and then do your best to do what is asked of you. 8. Be gracious and receptive. Be open to direction. Don’t challenge, make excuses or try to explain yourself. Stay open and easy to direct. Casting directors may want to see if you can take direction. 9. No chit chat. They don’t want to hear about the traffic, or how your day is going. Put yourself in their position. They will meet 15-50 performers auditioning in one day. Would you want to hear 50 excuses on why you were late? Go in. Do your best work. Get out. Leave them wanting more instead of having overdosed on you. 9. Auditions, like scenes, have a beginning, middle, and an end. Walk in confidently, take charge of how you want to work, do your job and get out of the room (always leave them wanting more). Once you have left the audition, let it go. You can have a great audition and still not get the job. They just went another way. 10. Casting directors remember good work. Follow all of these steps and you will be called back by the casting director. It may be for that part or it may happen five years down the line. Each successful audition is like money in the bank. Show yourself in the best light possible by being prepared, professional and positive.
