Let me introduce myself. Hi, my name is Barbara Larsen. I have been active in the pet industry for more than 22 years. In 1986 I graduated from Friendship Academy For Dogs in Washington DC with a Pet Dog Trainer and Kennel Management Certificate. I later worked as an understudy to Robert Vance with American Canine Institute in Mt. View, Ca. There I learned to Train in Canine Personal Protection, SchH, and Advanced Obedience instruction. I also managed his boarding kennel. At a later date I opened My own training and breeding business. Von Weissenberg German Shepherds and Dog Training, in Fremont California. I trained dogs for others and took my own dogs through a series of obedience and conformation titles. During that same period of time I worked as a Veterinary Technician for All About Pets Animal Hospital. When I moved to Las Vegas In 2001 I found a position as a Manager of a pet store chain. I worked with them for a year and a half and decided to move on. I then returned to the Veterinary Technician field, working with Dr. Elena Pederson at Advanced Animal Hospital.

In 2005 My parents opened a pet store here in Las Vegas, making it a family project. My Mother, father, brother and I ran Vegas Paws. I still do the purchasing of puppies for them. Over the years I’ve met some very nice and reputable folks in this industry. I personally took a trip to their homes and kennels to check them out and make sure everything was clean, up to standard with USDA and all the animals were well taken care of. I met a few I wouldn’t use again and a few who were hardworking friendly folk that took the time and care to do it right.

During the last three years we have added two new children to our brood. I Now am the mother of 4 beautiful daughters. Hence, the need for me to be at home more often came about. We recently took in numerous Shih Tzus that were the result of an irresponsible home breeder which you can view on our website. There were the usual expenses of spaying/neutering and vaccinations but the unexpected rapidly set in. Huge amounts of dental work were needed on the dogs. One dog alone had 25 teeth extracted. Two dogs had teeth that were so bad that the resulting infections caused their jaws to break. It gets worse. One little female had a lump that the vet feared was or could become mammary cancer so that was surgically removed. And it gets worse again. One little female was X-rayed and found to have a bladder stone the size of a golf ball. Can you imagine a dog that’s about 10 pounds with a golf ball sized stone in the bladder?
