Daytime lessons a block from Microsoft Campus (51st and 156th). Take a break and play some drums! Look how much fun we have!

I have a lot of students who are RockBand & Guitar Hero players, too. I'm helping them convert their RockBand kind of read-only reflex gamer-drumming to internally scripted drumming. Sound fun? Rock Band is a fantastic way to learn drums, you just have to tweak your approach to it a bit!

Outside of gamer tunes, what are some of the tunes my students are eating, sleeping, dreaming and progressively mastering during the summer of 2009?

Meshugga "Bleed"
Three Days Grace "Animal I Have Become"
Wolf Mother "Love Train", "Joker & the Thief", "Dimension"
Avenged 7 Fold "Beast and the Harlot"
Paul Simon "Fifty Ways to Leave Your Lover"
Led Zeppelin "When the Levy Breaks", "Fool in the Rain"
John Coltrane "Love Supreme"
Count Basie "Shiny Stockings"
Phil Collins "She's an Easy Lover"
Some Beastie Boys, and some Rage Against the Machine, too.

We're having a blast.

I also have some younger students preparing for their Jr. High, and High School jazz band auditions. All those who've already had their tryouts made it.

Of course my various students are asking about and learning other critical stuff, like how to make sure playing drums at home doesn't turn into mind numbing drudgery (how to goof off yet keep growing on their drums), how to lift their sticks up to easily get to toms, crashes, and big backbeats, read music (this is easy-peasy), count like maniacs, transcribe their favorite fills and beats (writing them out in european notation instead of tabs), how to solve whatever is driving them nuts, and OF COURSE how to flip and spin their sticks.

I also do audition crash prep. If a band sent you a recording to learn for an audition, and you're running out of time, and can't figure our some of the stuff: Get over here!
