This is a position that reports directly to the Terminal Supervisor for an Asphalt Facility and is located in Seattle, Washington
The Field Operator must be capable of safely performing all the functions listed below. Responsibilities and duties differ slightly depending on the area for which the Operator is responsible and the level of experience and acquired skills.
The following responsibilities and dimensions are considered essential to successful performance of this job. The individual shall perform any requested work that can be performed safely and for which they have been trained.


The individual selected for this position will have three primary functions. These include all responsibilities identified under “Base Field Operator Responsibilities” in addition to the responsibilities under each of the following sections:
Tank Farm Operations
Spill Prevention Boom Deployment/Retrieval
Rail Car Operations
Truck Loading Operations


Ÿ Base Field Operator Responsibilities

Learns, follows and enforces safety work practices and safety policies and regulations. Inspects work areas for unsafe conditions. Inspects personal protective equipment to assure it is in proper working order - periodically and before use. Reads MSDS forms and applies information and knowledge to safely handle and protect against exposure of hazardous material. Responds to emergencies in a safe manner depending on requirements and training. Wears fire retardant clothing and other safety equipment such as hard hat, safety glasses, long sleeved shirt, long pants, and full leather steel-toed boot. And, as appropriate, wears respirators, safety belts, and/or other fall protection devices and makes proper use of other safety equipment as appropriate to the job.
Learns and follows and enforces environmental protection policies and regulations. Prevents product spills and immediately corrects or cleans any spill or other environmental hazards. Prevent odors by checking and maintains proper equipment operation and following sound operating practices.
Maintains positive working relationships with co-workers and members of other departments.
Meets all training and performance requirements. Participates in continuing training and certification programs.
Works rotating 12-hour shifts consisting of day and night shifts working 7 days on then 7 days off. Operators routinely work weekends and many holidays. This position is an important part of a continuous operation process (24-hours per day / 365 days per year). This employee is occasionally required to work overtime and is occasionally called out on his/her scheduled day off when another operator is unavailable or when operating conditions compel. Because of the continuous operation requirement and the need to fill vacancies with overtime or with employee on their day off, good attendance is an essential function of this position. Employees in this position must maintain good attendance.
Spill Prevention Boom Deployment/Retrieval - Marine vessels in Puget Sound are required to have spillage boom deployed around the vessel to help contain any possible product releases into the water.

Works with Dock Person In Charge (PIC) in the company boats to deploy and retrieve spillage boom around dock and marine vessel, day or night.

Tank Farm Operations - Controls pumps, heaters and manifold systems to move semi-processed and finished petroleum products to storage and shipping tanks, following written and oral instructions.

Reads and receives operating schedules or instructions from Supervisor and PICs. Plans and executes movement of products through pipelines to processing, storage, and shipping units, utilizing knowledge of pipeline, valve manifolds, pump and tank connections and capacities.
Starts and stops pumps, observes pressure and flow meters and turns valves to regulate pumping speeds according to requirements. Opens and closes pipeline and tank valves to direct flow of product to destinations. Operates heaters to provide heat to products.
Records operating data, such as product and quantities pumped, stocks used, gage results, and operating time on forms or in log books.
Climbs and gages contents of tanks, using tape gage or automatic remote-controlled gauging equipment. Draws samples of product by lowering sample container into tank or by opening bleeder valves on pipelines or tanks to draw samples. Drains water from tanks.

Truck Loading Operations

Weighs trucks in using truck scale computer program.
Checks product compatibility of the product to be loaded with previously loaded product.
Directs truck and transport drivers to proper loading stations and assures that loading can be performed safely.
Occasionally trains or assist a driver to perform loading operations.
Opens valves to direct products to loading stations.
Prepares Bill-of-Lading for the customers, checking for accuracy of the information prior to loading.

Rail Car Operations

Instructs railroad as to car placement on tracks.
Completes necessary forms (acceptance, monitoring, discharge, etc.)
Calk wheels on rail car, set the de-railers, and place blue flag at the end of the car on each rail track.
Prepare rail cars for unloading (attach steam, condensate, and off-loading hoses, open dome lids and attach vapor recovery hoses)
Monitor rail cars while heating (product temperature and level).
Use pump to unload cars into the assigned storage tank.
Prepare for releasing the rail car.
