The Department of Revenue's Seattle office has a career opportunity for a Revenue Agent 1 (Tax Discovery). The successful candidate must have strong communication skills and be able to work independently. Job duties will include identifying unregistered businesses, then educating and assisting business owners so the business complies with Washington state tax laws.

**Division Overview:**
The mission of the Department of Revenue is to fairly and efficiently collect revenues and administer programs to fund public services, and advocate sound tax policy. The Compliance Division supports this mission by collecting taxes through education, investigation and enforcement on behalf of Washington citizens so that tax laws are applied fairly and state services are funded.
**Some of what you will do as a Revenue Agent 1:**
Using your inquisitive and self-motivated skills, you will independently locate, identify, investigate, register and assess avoided or evaded excise and/or use taxes from unregistered businesses and owners of vehicles, vessels, aircraft and other types of personal property on a daily basis. You will find a sense of accomplishment when you meet performance expectations that directly tie in with the agency's goal of working together to fund Washington's future. Other duties include:
* Multitasking by talking on the phone, typing notes into the department's computer system and directing taxpayers to useful information on DOR's website.
* Educating and advising taxpayers personally, by telephone, and in writing on their tax registration and reporting requirements, liabilities, filing deadlines and payment obligations as required by state tax laws and rules.
* Demonstrating the ability to use good judgment to determine which potential business leads add value.
* Using time management skills to timely and effectively work your cases in various stages while continuing to search for new non-paying business leads.
* Utilizing agency data sources and data mining techniques to generate lists of potential unregistered businesses for investigation.
* Analyzing financial data, issuing tax assessments, issuing tax warrants, and taking collection action to recover the amounts due.
* Using your negotiating skills to obtain full payment or negotiate payment agreements based on analysis and verification of financial information.
* Continuously updating histories and taxpayer information on appropriate agency computer systems.
Bachelor's degree in business or public administration, accounting, communications, finance, economics, political science, criminal justice, law, sociology, or psychology (degree must be from an accredited college or university by the U.S. Department of Education and Council for Higher Education Accreditation [CHEA])
Two years experience as a Tax Service Representative, Tax Information Specialist or other tax collection experience in the Department of Revenue.
Experience may be substituted year for year for education in any of the following areas:
* Experience directly responsible for collecting or attempting to collect debts owed or due from an individual or any kind of business entity.
* Experience in law enforcement, adjustment of claims, investigations involving personal background, business practices or fraud.
**The successful candidate will:**
* Possess clear communication skills to work with customers in person or over the telephone and in writing, sometimes in confrontational situations.
* Travel to taxpayer businesses to conduct field investigations.
* Use Excel to create tables, format data within a spreadsheet and sort and filter data.

This position is covered by a collective bargaining agreement between the Department of Revenue and the Washington Public Employees Association (WPEA) that contains a \"union security\" provision.
